A Nationalized Car Maker?

As much as America hates the idea of big government socialism, some of the best pieces of America are nationalized. Why can’t we have a nationalized car company? After all, it seems most car companies focus on making “bodywork” changes from year to year instead of concentrating on making safer and more reliable cars.

Some examples of (fairly) cheap and effective nationalized programs:
-The interstate highway system
-The military
-The postal service
-Pre-space shuttle NASA.
-FEMA. No joke! They did a superb job in disasters prior to Katrina, considering the magnitude and scale.
-Flood insurance (related to the above).
-National car database (21 million to track all the cars made in the USA? That’s great bang for the buck).
-EPA (sometimes too effective).
-Geological surveys.

These are things that the government taxes everyone for and provides one non-competitive provider. Say what you will about the US military, but the simple fact is that nobody messes with us because our military is top notch. No free market solution could provide that kind of protection. The same goes for roads and post. A bailout of the auto industry using taxpayer dollars will not benefit Americans in the long run.
